We have two variables (let's say m and w), so we need two equations. One equation is given in the question stem:
m + w = 1400
And Statement 1 provides us with another:
.36m + .50w = .42(1400)
Hence, (1) is sufficient since we have two unique equations and two variables.
Statement 2 tells us that 1400(.42) - 288 = 300 women have research goals, but it doesn't tell us how many women were surveyed.
So, (A) is the answer. Hope this helps!
