Only D places the extremely long modifier correctly to modify the author

A novelist subordinate clause(I), Selma became.....(II)
well i don't know which form is this...
if it would have been "As novelist " instead of "A novelist "
the Ist one would have been dependant clause.
Please clarify which form is used by D?
