I simplified it this way...

the army ......IS more than 2,000 years old and took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete IT.

for whatever they needed 36 year to complete you need a pronoun:"IT"
But the sentence never mentions what... so IT is vague, isnt it?

Just had this question on the GMATPrep test; the official answer is C
to complete(without it)

Thanks lilu. I was getting confused with this SC because it had no reference to the pyramid or place where the Chinese emporer was placed for his afterlife journey. So, "it"actually refers to nothing. So, B has a pronoun antecedent error.
