Though most people take it for granted now, the nationwide admission of students to colleges and universities based on academic merit is a relatively recent phenomenon, beginning only after World War II.

meaning: today, most people take for granted that admission process is based on academic merit. this only started after WWII

A - clear & concise

B - it is now taken for granted by most people - passive

C - Now taken for granted by most people - wordy + awkward, also "their" has no clear antecedent. Their could refer to colleges or students

D - "them" - wrong pronoun, this should be "it" . Also comma + but - incorrect clause structure used

E - comma + and - incorrect clause structure.

hope this helps.

also, note the placement of 'nationwide' in B - erroneous.

In additon to PC

C is passive

C avoids "nation wide" completely..so can eliminate safely as "nationwide" for sure has meaning..such errors can be quickly located.

Clarity-not clear about subject , which is taken for granted

( B-Passive , C and D-Pronoun errors could be eliminated)

PC

In E, "It" I cant see any antecedent at all or does it refer to "merit"

Also, though I could make out E had issues, but can you elaborate more on ", and" construction

In short, more on explantation for E

IMO "it" refers to the entire process i.e. getting admitted to colleges on the basis on academic merit

comma + and is wrong because this introduces independent clause, where we need a subordinate clause for the continuation of entire thought.
