two questions on Sentence correction

by MichelleW1982 » Mon Dec 15, 2008 10:47 am
Quesstion 1: During the nineteenth century Emily Eden and Fanny Parks journeyed throughout India, sketching and keeping journals forming the basis of news reports about the princely states where they had visited.

(A) forming the basis of news reports about the princely states where they had
(B) that were forming the basis of news reports about the princely states
(C) to form the basis of news reports about the princely states which they have
(D) which had formed the basis of news reports about the princely states where they had
(E) that formed the basis of news reports about the princely states they

For question 1, I understand the correct answer is D. However, my question is on the word "Visit". Someone told me that I can NOT say "visit where"...so I can't say "where they visited" (as shown in the original sentence).

Can someone tell me why i can't say "visit where"? what should come after the word VISIT in general. does it have to be a specific place? I am not a native speaker. This may seem basic. Thank you.

Question 2: Margaret Courtney-Clarke has traveled to remote dwellings in the Transvaal to photograph the art of Ndebele women, whose murals are brilliantly colored, their geometrical symmetries embellished with old and new iconography and in a style that varies from woman to woman and house to house.

(A) whose murals are brilliantly colored, their geometrical symmetries embellished with old and new iconography and in a style that varies from woman to woman and house to house
(B) whose murals are brilliantly colored, their geometrical symmetries are embellished with old and new iconography, and their style is varying among women and houses
(C) whose murals are brilliantly colored, their geometrical symmetries are embellished with old and new iconography, and they are in styles that vary from woman to woman and house to house
(D) with murals brilliantly colored, their geometrical symmetries embellished with old and new iconography, and their style varies among women and houses
(E) with murals that are brilliantly colored, their geometrical symmetries embellished with old and new iconography, and their styles vary among women and houses

for question 2, The correct answer is A. I know that other choices are wrong, but i think A is wrong as well. Don't you need a word to connect two complete sentences? right before "their genometrical symmentries..."???

Please help!!!

Hi. Please separate your questions and disguise the OA in the future. I don't feel that I can explain the first question sufficiently, but the second I can do.

It cannot be D or E, because these murals are the women's; "with" doesn't refer to them.

B and C are wrong because two independent clauses cannot be connected with "their." It needs a conjunction or a semicolon.

Here's where you're getting confused about A. "Their geometrical..." is NOT an independent clause, or as you put it, a complete sentence. Try reading it aloud--there is no complete thought. As this is a dependent clause, it may be connected with ", their."

Michelle, I'll try

Q1

here it goes:

we need a past perfect tense in a sentence to describe an action which preceded another action and is completed by the time the second action started.

Basically if your sentence is a time line, as listed below

Timeline

Action 1 Start__________________________________Action 1 End____Action 2 Start________________Action 2 End

Note:

In the 1st question the action - Emily and Eden's visit (Action 1) to the princely states occurred and was completed before the basis for the news reports came (Action 2) into existence.

Same way the keeping of journals is also an action which occurred before the news reports and hence the use of past perfect tense.

Hope this helps !!
