Official Verbal Guide SC Q No. 54

Which one is correct:-
1)...in both public and private life OR
2)...in both public and private lives?

The above is an extract from Official Verbal Guide SC Q No. 54. The question uses..."(he) was a mystic guided in both public and private life by..."

Got confused whether "both and" construction follows the same rule as we apply on "neither nor". Like "...neither he nor his friends are..."

For the construction "neither... nor" we should use a singular verb. Like "Neither John nor Bob was able to go there".

My bad...
The form of the verb following the idiom "neither... nor" depends on the form of the noun that is right after the particle "nor".

It seems to me that the trick in the word "life" because usually "both" is a plural pronoun and sounds like "both natural and human resources".

I think "and" is what makes it plural.
Had it been an additive, it would have been "life".
Correct me if i am wrong...
