According to a study by the Agricultural Research Service, confinement buildings must be adapted to animals, rather than adapting animals to buildings,if farmers want to breed their stock more successfully.

a) rather than adapting animals

b) instead of the adaptation of animals

c) rather than animals to be adapted

d) rather than animals

e) instead of animals adapting

That's a good way to think about it, but it is possible to use a verb in the second half of that comparison. It just has to be parallel to the verb used in the first half.

A ("adapting"), C ("to be adapted"), and E ("adapting") all use verbs that are not parallel to "must be adapted" in the first half, so we can eliminate them.

B uses "instead of", which is incorrect, leaving us with D.

instead of = substitution (literally means "in place of")
rather than = preference

The way i see it :

Forget Rather than vs Instead of !
confinement buildings must be adapted to animals
the above sentence must be parallel!
The only answer choice which adapts this parallelism is (C)

OA : (C)
