Ongoing confusion of Like and As

by hai1 » Fri Jan 15, 2010 1:01 pm
I read somewhere that like should be used to compare two nouns and as should be used for more than two.

In this below example, what is the problem in the sentence?

Margaret, the best known anthropologist of the twentieth century, helped shape public opinion on fundamentally important issues like attitudes toward children and families, along with the relative merits of competition and cooperation.

Like can only be used for comparison; it can never be used to provide examples. 'such as' is the correct phrase to replace 'like' in the sentence you provided.
