E is not correct - An in-depth study of HT, presented by Biographer DM, covers his rise to the presidency - HT's life is covered not the biographer... hope it helped... thanks

A. Biographer DM presented an in-depth study of HTs rise to the presidency, his leadership during his 8 years in office, and his return to private life in the acclaimed tome, Truman.

A is wrong because "his return to private life in the acclaimed tome, Truman" distorts the meaning and implies his return was in the acclaimed tome itself.

B. In the acclaimed tome Truman, Biographer DM presented an in-depth study of HT's rise to the presidency, his leadership during his 8 years in office, and his return to private life

This is the correct answer, as it brings modifier "In the acclaimed tome Truman" in the beginning. The antecedent of possessive pronoun "his" is "HT's". There is no ambiguity here. HT's rise, his leadership, and his return are all noun phrases and parallel.

C. Biographer DM, writing in the acclaimed tome Truman, presented an in-depth study of HT's rise to the presidency, leadership during his 8 years in office, and returning to private life

This is wrong because writing and presented are redundant. "Returning to private life" is simple gerund not parallel to rise and leadership.

D. An in-depth study of HT's rise to the presidency, his leadership during his 8 years in office, and his return to private life is presented by Biographer DM, writing in the acclaimed tome Truman

Passive voice construction, presented and writing use is redundant.

E. An in-depth study of HT, presented by Biographer DM, covers his rise to the presidency, his leadership during his 8 years in office, and his return to private life in the acclaimed tome, Truman.

Passive voice construction. "In the acclaimed tome, Truman" is at wrong location.

imo B. Its an active sentence which is preferred above passive sentences.

E is wrong because the phrase - "covers his rise to the presidency", his is being referred to biographer, not to HT, this is a sublime difference a passive reader can over look.

B is the correct one.

If you are confused between B and E,

In E, the prepositional phrase in the acclaimed tome, Truman is too far removed from what it is supposed to modify (in-depth study of HT). It incorrectly modifies return to private life because of erroneous placement.

By the way, I do not think that his is an ambiguous pronoun in E because presented by Biographer DM is a non essential modifier in the sentence.
