Hi,

I have come across following constructions -

1> evidence that suggests
2> evidence suggesting that
3> evidence suggesting
4> evidence to suggest that
5> evidence to suggest

Can experts explain if each of them is correct and how do they differ from each other

What lead you to ask this?
You can, for example never foretell what any one man will do, but you can say with precision what an average number will be up to!

I skipped to reply to this topic just because I am not an expert :) .. also, i was not sure about the correctness of my thoughts here.

Anyways, according to me,

1> evidence that suggests
Example: Scientist found an evidence that suggest the life on Mars

2> evidence suggesting that
Example: I have an evidence suggesting that Life exists on Mars

3> evidence suggesting
Example: My research has one fine evidence suggesting many people to sleep on time.

4> evidence to suggest that
Example: New evidence continues to suggest that Einstein was right - death is an illusion.

5> evidence to suggest
Example: New evidence continues to suggest people to eat fruits

All are Correct

For all of the above, meaning is the key.. GMAC will definitely put some other errors based on which we may eliminate the answer choices, apart from meaning issue.

Hi Mission2012,

Each of the 5 constructions that you listed COULD be correct under specific circumstances, so we would need to see a full sentence (and the 5 corresponding answer choices). What we NEED is context.

Most GMAT SCs are based on 2-4 grammar rules, and you won't need to know all of the rules involved to select the correct answer (usually knowing 2 of the rules is enough). As such, I wouldn't worry too much about this one set of idiom rules.
