OA wrong?

by adi_800 » Sat Aug 21, 2010 10:41 pm
What is the value of |x + 7|?
(1) |x + 3|= 14
(2) (x + 2)2 = 169

OA is D

I went for C

Where did you get the OA? Definitely wrong - should be C. From each statement, we get two different values of x (in statement 1, x can be 11 or -17, and in statement 2 x can be 11 or -15), each of which gives a different value for |x+7|. Combined, x must be 11, so |x+7| = 18.
