s^2 is always non-negative (and twice of it also, for sure), therefore the question itself is well-defined for every real number s.
When s is positive or null, Geva´s answer is right. When s is negative, please note that sqrt(s^2) = |s| = -s (try s=-1), therefore the correct answer, in general, is |s|*sqrt(2).
