B)
before it reaches the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed is used to grind their food.
C)
before it reaches the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they swallow are used to grind their food.
D)
before reaching the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed is used to grind their food.
E)
before it reaches the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed are used to grind their food.

We need to use pronoun IT here , to refer to food . Usage of Reaching here is awkward...

So i choose C

I also chose E because the swallowing of the stones occurs before it reaches the stomach therefore we would need to use "Have swallowed"... i could be completely wrong with that though...

I also believe it should be C and not E.

The complete sentence is in simple present tense and C maintains it.

Usage of 'have' in E makes it the perfect form which is unnecessary.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Harsha

Using of Reaching is awkward in this manner, it is hard to determine what it refers to

IMO E

A.The phrase before reaching the stomach does not have a clear subject."it" is needed else looks as if "they"(chicken" is modified

B.The singular verb is does not agree with the plural subject stones

C The present tense verb swallow should be replaced with the present perfect verb have swallowed in order to indicate that the swallowing occurred before the use of the stones.

D same prob as A "it" is missing

E .correct

It has to be E

The only viable contenders are B C and E

C is wrong, imo, because you need to use the past perfect tense to indicate that the chickens swallow the stones before those stones can be used to grind their food. E correctly uses the past perfect tense. Choose E.

Here is what I think:

A)
before reaching the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they swallow are used to grind their food. ....... we need a pronoun to refer to the food (It)
B)
before it reaches the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed is used to grind their food. ...... "stones" do not agree with "is used"
C)
before it reaches the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they swallow are used to grind their food. ...... Right
D)
before reaching the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed is used to grind their food. .... same as A
E)
before it reaches the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed are used to grind their food. .... "stones they have swallowed" indicates a completed action, however, in this case, a continuous action makes more sense, as in option C

What is the OA and OE?
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.
