by karthikpandian19 » Mon Jan 09, 2012 5:05 am
The exhibition of art from Nubians, the site of a Black civilization that goes back to the fourth millennium B.C., makes clear the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt to that of sub-Saharan Africa.

that the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt to that
that the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt with those
the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt to that
that Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt and those
the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt with that

In C and E, the exhibition...makes clear the Nubians does not convey the intended meaning. It is not the NUBIANS themselves but WHAT THE NUBIANS DID that is being made clear. Eliminate C and E.

In D, that Nubians combined does not convey the intended meaning. It was not NUBIANS (the site) that combined but THE NUBIANS (the people) who combined. Eliminate D.

In A, combined artistic elements from Egypt TO that of sub-Saharan Africa is unidiomatic. The proper idiom is to combine X WITH Y. Also, that (singular) cannot be used to stand in for elements (plural). Eliminate A.

The correct answer is B.

Karthik,
I noticed Option A has a "that" and the underlined portion of the question does not. Can you please update one of these. Not that it is going to change the answer.

Santhosh,

I understand that the underlined sentence and Option A should be same, but when i typed the answers i made mistake of juggling those their places and subsequently some experts have answered based on the answer choices. So it will not be apt to change/edit the post.

I will look to see tht no future mistakes happen

Combine X with Y. X and Y should both be similar either singular or plural.

Here artistic elements is plural so usage of that at the end is wrong

A C E are wrong.
D - combined X and Y can be used when we refer X and Y directly. Here artistic elements from egypt and those of sub saharan africa doesn't make sense with the usage of and

IMO B.
