GMAT Prep Q - Circle and Line

by tito1545 » Tue Mar 08, 2011 1:54 pm
Could anyone give me a step by step sol to this problem please .Why is the answer not C instead of E ????

Circle C and line k lie in the xy plane. If circle C is centred at the origin and has a radius 1 , does the line k intersect circle C ?

1.The x intercept of the line k is grater than 1
2.The slope of the line k is -1/10

Circle C and line k lie in the xy plane. If circle C is centered at the origin and has a radius of 1, does the line k intersect circle C?

1.The x intercept of the line k is greater than 1
2.The slope of the line k is -1/10
X-intercept is greater than 1, slope = -1/10, line k intersects circle C:

X-intercept is greater than 1, slope = -1/10, line k does not intersect circle C:

Thus, the 2 statements combined are insufficient to determine whether line k intersects circle C.

The correct answer is E.
