Please help !! DS questions .

by silvia928 » Sun May 25, 2008 8:26 pm
1.) What is the hundereds digit of the integer z?
(1) 10z =93,120
(2) z rounded to the nearest hundred is 9,300.

The answer is A, but i don't see why the (2) stmt is insufficient.

This is little confusing in DS prob when you can see both rhe statements eventually gives you the same ans i.e. 3 is hundreds digit.

But in statement 2: it says 9300 is nothing but the rounded value not the actual ! the actual value could be 9299 or 92898 something like that.

But in statement 1 it clearly says that z=9312.So sufficient.

Always, always, always plug in numbers when you're stuck.

For statement (2), we could plug in 9,290 since that rounded to the nearest hundered is 9,300. It could just as easily be 9,330 since that rounded to the nearest hundred is also 9,300.

Since we found two different possible values (2 and 3) for the hundreds digit, it's insufficient.
