The abstract paintings made by first year students at Juliet academy revel more about their artistic growth than do the realist sketches during their third year.

a) their artistic growth than do
b) how they grow artistically than
c) growing artistically than
d) how one grows artistically than
e) how the students grow artistically than do

[spoiler]WHY E is better than A - some may say THEIR could refer to PAINTINGS and STUDENTS and therefore A is wrong (pronoun ambiguity), but DO YOU think paintings have artistic growth ...that is nonsensical. Other than pronoun ambiguity in A, do you find other issue in A? Does E convey the the same meaning as original sentence. [/spoiler]

MASTERGMAT
In A, the antecedent of their could be paintings or students. If their refers to FIRST-YEAR students, then the intended meaning is not conveyed: how can sketches made in the THIRD YEAR reveal anything about the growth of FIRST-YEAR students? Eliminate A and B. (In B, they presents the same issue.)

In C and D, it is unclear what is being compared: a reader might think that the paintings reveal more ABOUT GROWING/HOW ONE GROWS artistically than ABOUT THE REALIST SKETCHES. Eliminate C and D.

The correct answer is E.

a) their artistic growth than do ........... Usage of "their" is ambiguous.
b) how they grow artistically than ....... Wrong comparison and also "they" ambiguous
c) growing artistically than ....... Wrong comparison
d) how one grows artistically than ..... Usage of "one" is pronoun error
e) how the students grow artistically than do ..... Correct comparison....

Correct answer is E

In A, if their refers to first-year students, the following meaning is conveyed:

The sketches during the THIRD year reveal less about the artistic growth of FIRST-YEAR students.

This meaning doesn't make sense. When the sketches are made in the third-year, the students -- at that point -- are THIRD-YEAR students.

C employs ellipsis: the omission of words whose presence is understood.
When ellipsis is used in a comparison, it must be CRYSTAL CLEAR what words have been omitted and what is being compared.
C could be saying either of the following:

The abstract paintings reveal more about growing artistically than ABOUT the realist sketches.
The abstract paintings reveal more about growing artistically than DO the realist sketches.

Since it is not crystal clear what word has been omitted and what is being compared, eliminate C.

Also, whereas C discusses the GENERAL PROCESS of growing artistically, the intended meaning of the sentence is that the paintings reveal how the STUDENTS grow artistically.
