I'll give it a shot.

The question is referring to consecutive terms of the sequence 1,-3,2,5,-4,-6

Therefore, you cant arrange this sequence in ascending or descending order.

variation = product of consecutive positive and negative TERMs.

1 * -3 = -3

-3 * 2 = -6

-4 * 5 = -20

Thus, 3 is the answer.

why 1 and -3 are "consecutive positive and negative TERMs"? just because -3 goes right after 1 in this specific sequence?
