Of the paintings that a certain artist created last year, the number of paintings that were unframed was 5 times the number of paintings that were framed. If 48 percent of the unframed paintings and 30 percent of the framed paintings were sold, what percent of the paintings that the artist created last year were sold?

A. 33%
B. 36%
C. 39%
D. 42%
E. 45%

total paintings = U + F

U = 5F

.48U + .3F = X%(U+F)

.48*5F +.3F = X%(6F)

12/5 F +.3F = X(6F)

(24+3)F/10 = X(6F)

27F/10 = X(6F)

27F/(10*6F) = X

9/20 = X

9/20*100 = X%

9*5 = X% = 45%.

Solved with example

A very easy method...........


let total 600


framed 100
unframed 500

48% unframed = 48*5 = 240
30% framed = 30

270/600

= 45%

What's the answer? I get E, and here's how I got there:

Let "framed" = F
Let "unframed" = U

i) We can infer from the first sentence that U = 5F
ii) From the second sentence, Total sold = 0.48U + 0.3F
iii) The % of Total Sold to Total Paintings is:
(0.48U + 0.3F)/(U + F)
iv) Substitute "5F" into "U", so you get:
(0.48(5F) + 0.3F)/(5F + F)
v) Solve, and you will get 2.7F/6F
vi) Eliminate the F's and solve 2.7/6 = 0.45

Stop 800 ur correct... thanks for that strategy..........i was trying to solve it algebraically but couldn't figure it out....

My thought as well If this helps u :)

percentage problem ! best approach plug in !!

i randomly chose:

total number of paintings he made =120

Unframed = 5 times the framed

Framed : Unframed = 1:5

which is 20:100

now 48 % of Unframed sold =48 paintings
30% of framed sold=6 paintings

total 54 sold out of 120

(54/120 )*100= 45%

Vishu same here with choosing 120

Any number and 5 times that shouls work for calculating the total to obtain the actual percent painting sold.
