A few DS questions

Hi,

Can someone help me with the following DS questions? Please also provide explanations.

1. The participants in a race consisted of 3 teams with 3 runners
on each team. A team was awarded 6 –n points if one of its runners
finished in nth place, where 1<= n <=5. If all of the runners finished
the race and if there were no ties, was each team awarded at least one
point?
(1) No team was awarded more than a total of 6 points.
(2) No pair of teammates finished in consecutive places among the top
five places.

OA is A

2. In the figure attached, segments RS and TU represent two positions of the same ladder leaning against the side SV of a wall. The length of TV
is how much greater than the length of RV?
(1) The length of TU is 10 meters.
(2) The length of RV is 5 meters.

OA is D

Maximum number of points
6-1=5
6-2=4
6-3=3
6-4=2
6-5=1

15 points

Stmt I

No team was awrded more than 6 points

This is telling us that no matter how we combine the points above atleast one runner from each team had to finish in one of the 5 spots. If not a particluar team would be awarded more than 6 points (given atmost 6 points were awarded to each team)


SUFF

Stmt II

No pair of teammates finished in consecutive places among the top
five places


1,3,5 could go to three runners in team A. 2,4 SPOTS could go to 2 OUT OF 3 runners in team B.

(or)
1,3,5- team a
2-team b
3 -team c

INSUFF

I havent understood how statement I is sufficient i.e no team is awarded more than 6 points.
I understand that score of any team cannot be more than 6 points, but it can be exactly 6 and that would mean 2 members from the same team end up as being runners up for 1st and 5th place. Infact we can have many combinations this way as long as the score remains below 6 or exactly 6.
Please help me understand if I am wrong in my thinking.

6-1=5
6-2=4

You are correct.2 teams wiht 6 points could mean (5,1) and (4,2). The third team can be 3

Whats I was trying to explain was no matter how u look at it atleast 1 tema memeber from each team should finish in one of the 5 spots therefore every team would have atleast 1 point definitely

Got it !

Even if 2 members from same team end up as runners up, the score cannot be more than 6 points and this restriction will bring in atleast 1 member of each team in the runners up list. Thus, minimum 1 point will be scored by each team.
