scored poorly in veritasprep mock

by gmatquant25 » Sat Aug 17, 2013 3:02 pm
My Gmat appointment is on 25th Aug . I took veritas Prep mock today and scored 540 (Q39 / V26) .
I am unable to find the flaw in my preparation . I give cent percent but unfortunately i cannot touch even 600 score .Where do I lack ? I wrote GMATPREP few weeks back and scored 580 in that .

During my test this is what I realized -
1)I get restless during the test and lose concentration on the questions I am tackling . So, I 've re-read the entire question over again.

2) I am unable to find out a way to ace Quant section . During the test I forget the concept pertaining to certain topics and sometimes I get those right and miss ( answer incorrectly) other topics . How do i improve the quant ?

3)I cannot touch 30 in Verbal. How much time should I invest in Verbal section?

The tough part is that I need to write the GMAT in 3 weeks from now . How do I execute my plan to achieve at least 690( 700 possibly) . Aside, my score is stagnant even after 2 months of serious prep work . I am loosing motivation ..

appreciate some guidance and strategy from experts .

It sounds like you need more time to prepare, but I think it's too late for you to reschedule your test.

Aside: I typically suggest that students achieve their target score on at least 2 practices tests before they take the official test.
I get restless during the test and lose concentration on the questions I am tackling . So, I've re-read the entire question over again.
It's easy to lose concentration during a 3.5-hour test. This can be a big problem during the Verbal section where the passages can be long and/or boring. As a result, you lose focus. Since it's crucial that you engage 100% in the passage, I suggest that you feign (fake!) interest. So, rather than approach a new passage/question with dread, be over-the-top enthusiastic ("Excellent! This passage is about textile manufacturing!!"). The better your engagement, the better the results.

You'll find additional tips to help you better engage with the passage in this free video: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat- ... on?id=1123

Cheers,
Brent

Hi Brent , Thanks for the inputs . I rescheduled my GMAT for 13th Sept. That means I have 26 days to prepare for the Exam . How do I execute my plan based on my current performance? Should I review all the questions I got wrong or go back and learn theory? I know It's difficult to answer .What I 'm thinking is to concentrate more on verbal for the week of 19th and tackle few quants ( for 2 hours) just so I do not lose touch . And then start taking MGMT CATS ( I have 2 MGMT CAT and 1 GMATPREP) .

Do you think i need an entirely different strategy ? because I have been seriously preparing for the Exam for 2 months now and I am yet to score beyond 600 ..that's something to think about .

thanks again~

It looks like your Quant and Verbal scores are both around the 45th percentile, so I'm not sure I'd start focusing more on Verbal.

Instead, I suggest that you first focus on concepts that have the greatest return on investment (ROI). These are concepts that are tested frequently and require the least amount of time to learn. In my opinion, these concepts are:
- Sentence Correction
- Data Sufficiency strategies
- Percent
- Integer Properties
- Powers/roots
- Algebra
- Geometry

I say all of this because I see a lot of students spending tons of time agonizing over concepts like Probability and Counting, when these concepts are not tested much.

Now CR and RC questions probably have the lowest ROI. I'm not saying that you shouldn't prepare for them; I'm just saying that improvements take a long time, especially for non-native English speakers. For CR, be sure you understand the various question types.

Finally, try to take several practice tests in order to perfect your time management skills and build your endurance.

By the way, you mention that you have 1 official GMATPrep test remaining. Since these are the mst accurate practice tests, I should point out that you can take these tests multiple times. Yes, you will see some repeated questions, but not that many. If you're interested, I wrote an article for BTG on this topic: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/03/ ... iple-times

Cheers,
Brent
