A midwesterner...

by shipra » Tue Jun 24, 2008 8:39 pm
77. The man was always aware, sometimes proudly and sometimes resentfully, that he was a small-town Midwesterner who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him.
(A) who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him
(B) who had been thrust into a world that was dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him
(C) who had been thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and people more polished than he was
(D) thrust into a world dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him
(E) thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than he

we require a past perfect tense here. hence A D n E r out.

B - ".............. than him". him is an object pronoun n hence cannot refer back to "the man" - subject of the sentence.

Hence IMO C.

Thanks!

Hi loki.gmat,

Could you please elaborate your explanation? I didnt understand.

B 'sounds' correct to me. Isn't that 'Him' refers to 'he' that is used earlier in the sentence ?

Thanks,
Naresh

I am still torn between B and D. Why is the C the correct answer..or is it?

My Choice would be "D". "B" could not be correct because the sentence reads " world that was dominated by more wealthy"... World still exists and it is dominated by wealthy.. It has not gone away,World and Wealthy people dominance still exists.

(A) who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him

Was is clearly wrong

(B) who had been thrust into a world that was dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him

More is moved ahead to wealthy from polished. I think more was used to show the difference between the level of wealthier and better educated men to the man.

(C) who had been thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and people more polished than he was

Looks good to me and my pick

(D) thrust into a world dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him

he did not thrust by himself. Also this thrust has to happen before he can get aware. We already have the other event in simple past. so i feel that the other event should be past perfect.

(E) thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than he

Reasons mentioned in B & D make it worse.

What is the OA?
