You have a sequence 1, -3, 2, 5, -4, -6 , variation in sign as defined by the problem is taking 2 consecutive terms like 1 and -3 and checking if their product is negative, 1*-3=-3, that would be one variation in sign. Basically, if you have 2 consecutive terms with different signs.

1, -3 - Yes
-3, 2 - Yes
2, 5 - No
5, -4 - Yes
-4, -6 - No

Answer is 3.
