NEED ASSISTANCE GUYS..

Hi All..


I was just looking for few answers wen i stumbled onto this site.
Pretty neat .. the feel to it and the members seem to be very mch into GMAT fever.. just the way it shd be :)

Anywhichways.. I guess an Intro is due from my side:

I am from India and currently a GMAT aspirant.
Professionally, i am an Engineer, Comp Sc Engineer at that.

I plan to appear for GMAT in abt mid june but realistically mite appear for it only at june end or early july.

I need some (infact lots of guidance here) guys..

I am at ease regarding the quant section and spoken english isnt bad to be honest.. its the intricacies which stumps me at time. :P
I begun my prep this month only.. and got the e-material which i use for practice.
Using Manhattan Guide for the SC.
Also frnds who have appeared in the past for the test been supplying me material daily regarding the SC and the CR. But that wd be irrelevant here as i cannot post the level of difficulty.


So my main request and requirement here is :

1) A lil pep talk (not kidding) ,
few words of encouragement will really help.

2) A good advice/schedule to approach
(i understand that differs from person to person but i can def try)

3) Suggestions for Material and even internet links for the practice material

4) Your Support :)


Hope to be a reg here and keep up the tempo with all of u...

For the Pep Talk well you can read the debriefs of the members in I BEAT THE GMAT section. Their stories will surely inspire you.

Well for this also, read the debriefs of members and do read the sticky ones.

3) Suggestions for Material and even internet links for the practice material

For material you can use
OG 12(If you have not purchase OG 11)(IMPORTANT)
OG 10(IMPORTANT)
OG Quant Review(IMPORTANT)
OG Verbal Review(IMPORTANT)
Manhattan Gmat SC guide(Make sure you have the latest edition ie 2008 one(IMPORTANT)
Kaplan 2009 Premier with CD
Kaplan 800

Apart from these books you can get many other books, but do buy them only if you have enough time to study them.

Also you can visit GMAT Math and Verbal sections on the forum for additional practice.

Also from which city in India are you from?

One thing i forgot to ask..
How good a time is good enuf to Beat the Gmat..?
Targetting 700+ score.

I agree that will depend on person to person but still a tentative answer would really help. Say with a dedicated 4 hour practice daily

I believe 3-4 months is a solid amount of time for prep. Any more and it starts to drag, any less and you might not be doing enough. I would suggest 2-3 months of learning the fundamentals and practicing and then spend the last month doing 12-15 practice CAT exams under realistic conditions.

Of course a lot of this depends on where you're currently at and what your goals are.

Well ..
one lil thing more.. say if i ask u to break it down section wise,...? i mean Asking specific time allotment for Verbal and for Quant??
Reason m askin is cuz i am already thru with my Quant portion and only the Verbal is left out..

So how mch of dedicated time for only the verbal ..?

It really depends on where you're at right now and what your goal is. If you're scoring in the 20's in verbal and want to get into the 40's then there really isn't a quick fix. Reading comprehension can only be improved by doing a lot of reading (ie. something that can't be crammed). Sentence correction is generally the easiest to improve on. Critical reasoning requires a lot of practice so that you internalize your approach to the various question types.

Have you taken a diagnostic CAT to see where you're currently at. I suggest you do an inventory of your strengths and weaknesses and then create a course of study to address your weaknesses. How long it takes is a function of what your goal is.
