What is the median number of employees assigned per project for the projects at Company Z?

(1) 25 percent of the projects at Company Z have 4 or more employees assigned to each project.
(2) 35 percent of the projects at Company Z have 2 or fewer employees assigned to each project.

I assume this is a Data sufficiency question and I would choose E. Neither states on their own nor combining the statements will lead to a solution. Not enough information is given.

answer c.

statement 1)

1/4 have 4 or more...insufficient

statement 2)

7/20 have 2 or less.insufficient

Combined.

Median is number that's positioned in middle. so terms that are distributed most will have median. 2/5 or 40% of projects have to have 3 workers assigned. so median is in that 40%.

sufficient.

how did you arrive at this conclusion??
I want to know the reasoning behind.

So median will be always 3.

I may be missing something here but why can't 40% of projects have 5 or more employees or only 1 employee for that matter

Plug in projects = 100.

Statement 1:
25 projects have 4 or more employees.
Thus, projects 76-100 have 4 or more employees.
No way to determine the median.
Insufficient.

Statement 2:
35 projects have 2 or fewer employees.
Thus, projects 1-35 have 2 or fewer employees.
No way to determine the median.
Insufficient.

Statements 1 and 2 together:
Projects 1-35 have 2 or fewer employees and Projects 76-100 have 4 or more employees.
Thus, projects 36-75 have more than 2 but fewer than 4 = 3 employees.
Median = 3.
Sufficient.

The correct answer is C.

I don't get it too...the question does not say that 25% is at the higher band or that the 35% is at the lower band. (Although we can deduce 25% band is higher than the 35% band).

Why can't the rest 100-(25+35)=40% be at an even higher band (eg 5 employees or more) ?

I muffed up on this question too and picked E. Sounds like they want us to assume that the middle projects will have less than four, but more than two.

Thus, if a project has been assigned 5 employees, or 6 employees, or 100 employees -- or any number of employees 4 or greater -- then it is contained within this 25%.

Statement 2: 35% of the projects have each been assigned 2 or fewer employees.
Thus, if a project has been 2 employees or 1 employee, it is contained within this 35%.

Statements 1 and 2 combined:
Thus, every project that has not been assigned 4 or more employees or 2 or fewer employees -- in other words, every project that has been assigned exactly 3 employees -- is contained with the remaining 100-25-35 = 40%.

Listing the projects in increasing order, we get:

1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2....3,3,3,3,3,3,3.....4,5,5,6,7,8....
<----35%-->....<----40%----->....<---25%--->

Median = 3.
Sufficient.
