According to me,

{A} - CORRECT
{B} - INCORRECT; "subject of the" is wrong; "as those"
{C} - INCORRECT; "as" usage
{D} - INCORRECT; "subject of the" is wrong; "as" is incorrect; meaning is impacted by removing "although"
{E} - INCORRECT; meaning issue by removing although--> humid temperature is not the reason;

B. because, although the climate in Europe is fairly humid, libraries there are not
subject of the extremes of temperature and humidity as those that - what is those referring to?
C. because, although the climate in Europe is fairly humid, libraries there are not

D. because the climate in Europe is fairly humid, but still libraries there are not
subject of the extremes of temperature and humidity as Change in meaning. It appears that "being fairly humid" helps in preserving books
E. because the climate in Europe is fairly humid, but libraries there are not subjected to the extremities of temperature and humidity such as those that - Change in meaning. It appears that "being fairly humid" helps in preserving books

Good answers. One other point: "Extremities," found in C) and E), is not the right word choice here.

Hi ani781,

It's idiomatic to say, "The pattern swung between (the) two extremes." It would not be idiomatic to say, "The pattern swung between (the) two extremities." Folks would laugh at you if you ever said that. ;) Also, ever heard the Billy Joel song, "I Go to Extremes"? "Extremities" just wouldn't work there. B-)

From a dictionary:

extremity

1 the furthest point or limit of something : the peninsula's western extremity.
"¢ ( extremities) the hands and feet : tingling and numbness in the extremities.
2 the extreme degree or nature of something : the extremity of the violence concerns us.
"¢ a condition of extreme adversity or difficulty : the terror of an animal in extremity.

None of these definitions really fit in the sentence.

Hope this helps. :)
