Let the rate of work of machines = x

6 machines can complete work W in 12 days. This gives

6x*12 = W
x = W/72

Now let y additional machines are required to complete work in 8 days. This gives

(y+6)W/72*8 = W

y+6 = 9
y = 3. Hence answer
