GMAT Prep DS

Can any one help me with this one?

My answer was E. My thinking was as follows combined we know

x-y = 1/2
and either both x&y are positive or both x &y are negative.

So if we assume x = 1 and y = 0.5. this satisfys both the statement
but if we assume x = -0.25 and y = -0.75 this also satisfys the two statements

Please help

Hi,

For x=-0.25 and y=-0.75, you get x/y = 1/3 which is <1> 1.

Munged with the original post, sorry. Here's what I wanted to say

For x=-0.25 and y=-0.75, you get x/y = 1/3 which is < 1
