recent town meeting

by ankit0411 » Wed Sep 05, 2012 9:59 am
At a recent town meeting, the Parks Commissioner suggested that the town's Jefferson Park be closed between two and six a.m., in order to protect it against acts of vandalism. However, the Police Commissioner suggested that such a restriction would not have a significant effect on Jefferson Park, since in the previous year only five percent of the acts of vandalism committed in the park occurred between two and six a.m.

Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the argument of the Police Commissioner?

A Few citizens report acts of vandalism that they witness during daylight hours.
B The town has several parks other than Jefferson Park, all of which are open twenty-four hours a day.
C Jefferson Park could be protected from vandalism by an increase in the number of police officers patrolling it during nighttime hours.
D Vandalism is far less rampant in Jefferson Park than it is in the parks of many neighboring towns.
E The greatest proportion of vandalism-related damage to the park comes from acts committed between two and six a.m.

Please discuss each answer choice ! OA after some discussion !

Thanks,
Ankit

A Few citizens report acts of vandalism that they witness during daylight hours.
As reported incidents of vandalism during daylight are less, even 5% is the figure on higher side. Thus, it somewhat strengthens the police commissioner's (PC's) argument.
B The town has several parks other than Jefferson Park, all of which are open twenty-four hours a day.
I don't find it very relevant. Simply a premise.
C Jefferson Park could be protected from vandalism by an increase in the number of police officers patrolling it during nighttime hours.
It is also irrelevant. Here, method to protect the part are described.
D Vandalism is far less rampant in Jefferson Park than it is in the parks of many neighboring towns.
Here, frequency of the acts is compared between different parks. Not so relevant again.
E The greatest proportion of vandalism-related damage to the park comes from acts committed between two and six a.m.
This statement primarily attacks the police commissioner's (PC's) argument. Though, PC may be right that few (5%) vandalism acts occurred in the park but the damage was maximum during those hours. Hence, it is wise to close the park between those hours.
Hence, I will go for option E)
