the answer seems to be C but,

from 1), we only know the x is either 0<x<1 or -1<x<0.....

Can anyone guide me?

Hmm, from (2), we know x < |x| i.e. x < 0. Why is (2) alone not sufficient ?

Yeah, 1 tells us 0<x<1 (or) -1<x<0. insufficient.
