GMAT Strategy

by yogilale » Mon Aug 12, 2013 8:42 pm
Hi All,

I am going to take GMAT within 2 months time say by Oct 15, 2013. I need your advice on the strategy and the resources to be used. To give brief introduction, I had given GMAT once in 2008 and scored a miserable 490 (V:21; Q:36; AWA:5) although I used to score around 600 in practice test. I was so set back by the score that I didnt have guts to take it up again. But now I have decided to give it and my target is to score 720. I know the gap is huge and I am ready to give my best shot.

I am a Chartered Accountant by profession with almost 8 years of work experience. The last I had seen Maths was way back in 1998. The reason for mentioning this is the lack of basic Quant knowledge. My verbal skills are also not so great. So if a standard effort to crack 720 in GMAT requires 'x' effort in Quant and 'y' effort in Verbal, I believe I will require '1.5x or 2x' in Quant and '1.25y or 1.5y' in Verbal. I have left my job and taken a break and hence can devote around 10 hours everyday for preparation on weekdays and 5 hours on weekends.

Request you to share your valuable inputs. Thank you.

Hi yogilale,

You've given yourself a solid amount of study time and it sounds like you've assessed your "weak spots" correctly. If you can answer a few questions, then I'll be happy to offer some advice:

1) What schools are you planning to apply to?
2) What materials have you purchased already?

To help you along with some basic math practice, I recommend that you spend some time at Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org). The free resources there should help you to reacquaint yourself with basic Algebra, Arithmetic and Geometry as well as some specialty categories.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the prompt reply. The answer to your first question is that I am targetting ISB, Hyderabad, India or IIM, Ahmedabad, India as of now as it is purely an economically wise decision. I am looking at their 1 year full time course. I have not yet done any research on other colleges but will soon do that. I wish to specialise in Finance.

I have not yet purchased any books but before doing that wanted to have suggestions and advice from all the esteemed members like you.

I hope I was able to answer your questions with clarity. Waiting for your valuable advice.

I certainly agree that you should work on your basic math skills. Yet, you do want to do this with a GMAT-focus. Just as an example, the Veritas books have "skill builder" sections at the beginning of nearly every book. These sections are up to 90 pages long and help to take you from (to use Algebra as an example) "can I combine exponents?" to attempting 700+ level questions by the end of the lesson in that book.

So while you are studying those math basics, you want try to keep your eye on the goal --- which is the GMAT. 2 months is not so long that you can afford to study things that you will not need for the test. The same is true of grammar for sentence correction. You need to have some direction in your studies.

Have you taken a practice test since 2008? The new Veritas practice tests are highly regarded for their accuracy and on of those is available free. You might want to take it just to see where you are now as you get ready to start some intense studies for the next two months.
