Let us assume that x = number of clients at the beginning of last year
and y = number of new clients
Then we to find the value of (x + y)/x or 1 + (y/x).

(1) The ratio of the number of clients that Company X had at the beginning of last year to the number of new clients that it acquired during the year was 12 to 1 implies x : y = 12 : 1, using which we can find the value of 1 + (y/x); SUFFICIENT.

(2) Company X had 144 clients at the beginning of last year is NOT sufficient as we cannot find the value of 1 + (y/x).

The correct answer is A.
