This can be solved in many ways,alex.gellatly wrote:If x does not equal 0, then (x+1/x)^2 - (x-1/x)^2 =
Method 1:
(x + 1/x)² = (x² + 2 + 1/x²)
(x - 1/x)² = (x² - 2 + 1/x²)
Hence, (x + 1/x)² - (x - 1/x)² = 2 + 2 = 4
Method 2:
Let us assumes, (x + 1/x) = a and (x - 1/x) = b
Hence, (x + 1/x)² - (x - 1/x)² = (a² - b²) = (a - b)(a + b) = (2/x)*(2x) = 4
The correct answer is E.
