I don't get it

by feeet » Sun Apr 12, 2009 12:19 am
hi,

please explain the attached question. I do not get why it is C

From (1) we know that n>-1, so n could be negative or positive.
From (2) we know that n*p must be postive so both (p and n) must be positiv or both negative.

Since n can be both (1), I do not see why we taking (1) and (2) together is sufficient?!?!

Thanks

stmt 1 says n > -1
stmt 2 says n and p Both are +ve or Both are -ve.

Combining 1 and 2 ,
from 1, n cannot be -ve coz n is an integer > -1.
could be 0, 1 .. etc

from 2, both n and p should be both +ve or both -ve
so n = 0 is ruled out . So both n and p are +ve. ie
n > 0 , p > 0
Sufficient.

ht helps
