Hi AbeNeedsAnswers,

We're told that 1 < X < Y < Z. We're asked which of the answers has the GREATEST value. This question can be solved by TESTing VALUES.

IF...
X = 2, Y = 3, Z = 4

Answer A: 4(3) = 12
Answer B: 4(4) = 16
Answer C: 2(7) = 14
Answer D: 3(6) = 18
Answer E: 4(5) = 20

Final Answer: E

We could also do algebra. Here's how to compare D vs E, and from this you can extrapolate how to do the others:

y * (x + z) vs z * (x + y)

yx + yz vs xz + yz

subtract yz from both sides:

yx vs xz

divide both sides by x:

y vs z

z is bigger, so the right side is bigger, so E > D.

We can let x = 2, y = 3, and z = 4, and we have:

A) z(x+1)

4(3) = 12

B) z(y+1)

4(4) = 16

C) x(y+z)

2(7) = 14

D) y(x+z)

3(6) = 18

E) z(x+y)

4(5) = 20

[1] Assign Test Values

Must follow rule: 1 < x < y < y

x = 2
y = 3
z = 4

[2] Plug In & Calculate

A. z(x + 1) -> 4(2 + 1) = 12
B. z(y + 1) -> 4( 3 + 1) = 16
C. x(y + z) -> 2(3 + 4) = 14
D. y(x + z) -> 3(2 + 4) = 18
E. z(x + y) -> 4(2 + 3) = 20

Answer: E

x=2,y=3,z=4 , which satisfies the condition 1<x<y<z

If we use this values in the answer options
A. z(x + 1) = 4(3) = 12
B. z(y + 1) = 4(4) = 16
C. x(y + z) = 2(7) = 14
D. y(x + z) = 3(6) = 18
E. z(x + y) = 4(5) = 20 So max value we are getting is E.
