Hi All,

We're told that a certain restaurant that regularly advertises through the mail has 1,040 cover letters and 3,000 coupons in stock and that in its next mailing, each envelope will contain 1 cover letter and 2 coupons. We're asked if ALL of the cover letters in stock are used, then how many coupons will remain in stock after this mailing. This question comes down to some basic note-taking and Arithmetic.

Each envelope will include 1 cover letter - and since ALL cover letters are going to be sent, then that will create 1040 envelopes...
Each of the envelopes will also include 2 coupons, so a total of (2)(1040) = 2080 coupons will be used.
With 3000 total coupons available, there will be 3000 - 2080 = 920 coupons remaining after the next mailing.

Since all 1,040 cover letters were used, twice as many coupons, or 2,080 coupons, were used. Therefore, there are 3,000 - 2,080 = 920 coupons left.
