Practice Tests & final GMAT

by ankur.agrawal » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:58 pm
I have planned to give my GMAT in 15 days time now.

Plans : Take 7 tests in total before the D Day:

5 - MGMAT CAT

2 - GMAT prep

1st MGMAT CAT score : 540 :(. {Quant:39 , Verbal 26} . Mistimed the sections & had to guess on certain questions in the end on both the sections. While evaluating the tests , noticed that i made too many careless mistakes in the quant section & feel that could have easily done 6 or 7 more questions without too much effort. Concentration was the main factor i guess. Same with verbal. Concentration was on the minimum.

I have to take GMAT in any case within 15-20 days nows. Looking for advices that will discipline me in these last critical days. Obviously looking for a 700 . I just want to make sure that whatever i have learned & practiced works on the D day. Please give frank opinions . :)

That's a tough ask. But if you have enough confidence, there is no reason you should not do this. I propose the following.
1. Start giving AWA in every test.
2. Analyze your test in detail. Identify your weak points.
3. Try to get 700-800 level challenge questions. The BTG practice questions is a good resource I guess. I have heard good reviews.
4. Monitor your errors.
5. Keep your expectations low. If you get a low score, you should be ready to accept it. Dont pressurize yourself.
6. If you have enough time in all these 15 days, I also recommend studying the important question types from Powerscore CR Bible.
7. Maybe Kaplan 800?

Hats off to you for trying!
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

Hey thanks for the nice & detailed opinion. Recent Update:

MGMAT CAT 2 : 630 : Q:47; V: 30 . An improvement of 90 points from my previous test. :) Gud for keeping the spirits high.

MGMAT CAT 3 is scheduled day after tomorrow. Tomorrow is reserved for scrutiny of MGMAT CAT 2.

All the best Ankur.
You must be targetting R3 of 2012? Else i feel there is no need to put yourself in a pressure cooker situation. If thats the case then wish you all the luck.
Also, please see that you dont burn urself wth all the practice tests. i would surely have not liked it, but then all of us are not the same.
May be you can use Stacey's approach to analyse your practice tests,(though time consuming, effective).
All the best!!
Keep us updated.

Hey , thanks for taking interest.

R3 of 2012 - I think you meant to say R3 of 2011. No i am not looking into admissions this year. I am looking to apply in R 1 around september this year. I am thinking of giving GMAT in a hurry as i feel i have been procrastinating a lot in the last few months & that is definitely hurting my self confidence. Secondly i don't have much work pressure now , so can use the Time effectively for studying. Thirdly i am ready to take the test again in case i do not perform well on the 1st time.(So i can give GMAT another chance to GMAT around mid june or July starting.).

I know it is not necessary at this point of time to put myself in a pressure cooker, but i think it will hurt my self confidence a lot rather than scoring well on GMAT.

After all Self belief matters in life more than the GMAT :). Wow i am becoming philosophical .LOLLLLLLL

Sorry that was a typo. I did mean to say 2011.
Analysing practice test link, here you go, its a 2 part article, at the end you of the article you will find the link to the other part.

https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2011/02/ ... sts-part-1

but let me warn you it takes time to do such analysis. as you are nearing your tst date, i would advise you can to analysis on the timing part and the assessment reports.
as you are taking MGMAT tests, they already provide you with detailed analysis, assessment reports etc.

Cheers,
