Recommendations for GMAT Prep

I am thinking about taking the GMAT and I came across this site while doing some research. Browsing aroung a little bit, it seems like this will be a great resource in the future for me.

So far, I have just done very basic research on the GMAT and I only know about the basic structure of the test. I haven't taken any practice exams and I haven't even looked at the type of questions on the test. As someone who has already taken the GMAT (or is currently studying for it), how would you recommend I start preparing for the test? Should I just buy some books and start doing practice tests? Or should I sign up for a prep course? Are there any other approaches you would recommend?

I would like to get a 690 or higher on the test.

Getting started with your prep is a difficult process. Probably a good place to start is to just get familiar with the GMAT test and understand what is being tested. Check out the GMAT Resource Wiki, https://www.beatthegmat.com/wiki/, and look at the section "GMAT 101". There are some high-level articles there that serve as good starting points.

Next, you need to figure out whether you wish to study on your own or get a GMAT prep class. There are a variety of factors involved in this decision, but two big concerns: (1) do you feel like you have the time to commit to consistent study over the next 2-3 months? And (2) do you feel like you have the discipline to put together a strategy and stick with it during your prep?

If you can answer "Yes" and "Yes" to these questions, then self study might be a good option for you. Most members of this community are self studiers, so you can get a lot of support from us here. If you question your own discipline or time commitments, then opting for a GMAT prep class might be a good option. You can do some searching into the old posts on this forum to get a sense of what people think about the various GMAT prep programs. In terms of next steps, I recommend:
  • Reading through the GMAT 101, as suggested above.
  • Taking a GMATPrep practice test (available on MBA.com) to gauge your current performance
After going through these steps, I think you'll be in a better position to decide how you'd like to proceed with your GMAT studies.

Eric,

Thanks for your response. You've pointed out some great resources. I started looking into some of them.

I still have to make up my mind on whether I want to go with the "self study" approach or take a prep course. I 'm not sure whether I have sufficient time to study a lot on my own, mainly due to frequent work related travel. Traveling may also have an impact on my study discipline.

I will let you know once I make my decision.
