How much does a toefl score really weight?

by cecta2001 » Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:21 am
Hi,

First of all, thanks in advance for this forum. It has help me a lot in different ocasions and I hope it can help me again now.

A little bit of my profile:

Gmat 730 (q 50, v 38) AVA 5.0
Cfa level 2 passed (I'm adressing on my essays why I think the CFA is not a substitute to a MBA. Should I explain in greater detail in my optional essay to really explain this point?)
3 years work on Private Equity, tons of experience leading projects
Very good GPA, certanly greater than 3.0 but depends on "converting scale"
Toefl 104
Brazilian

I'm only applying for Wharton, Columbia and Booth because those are the only ones I really want. I realize that this may be a mistake, but I really don´t have the time to write good essays for any other colleges so I'll sticky with those three by now.

My two questions are:
1) Am I competitive?
2) How much does my toefl score really hurts my application?

I focused on gmat and almost forgot about the Toefl, therefore I only did it once. I'm sure I'm better than a 104 but I won't have time to take the test again. Chicago sets a minimun score at extacly 104 and both Wharton and Columbia don't release this information.

Should I still apply? Can I do anything at all to mitigate the effect of my low toefl score?

Once again, thanks a lot for your help.

Regards,

P.S: I did post this topic in another forum and I apologize for it. I was supposed to post it hear. I'll try and erase the other post.

Short answer: you're competitive. TOEFL is essentially a check the box item. As long as you meet expectations here, it shouldn't raise further questions. Your GMAT is the more important number and you killed it. Nice work and good luck. Remember to be creative and passionate in your essays and weave a compelling story that is personal and memorable.

I would definately go and retake it. For instance: Harvard disencourages anyone lower then 109 to even apply. You don't want such a silly score to ruin your application.

I disagree that it's a "silly score". A 104 is good enough for most schools - everything above 100 is pretty OK. Indeed, Harvard asks for a 110, but since you're not going for Harvard and your GMAT score is 730, I don't think you'll have any issues with it. This holds true especially if you've been using English in your job!
