Profile Evaluation - Military Background

by jk2010 » Mon Feb 14, 2011 9:23 am
Hello,

I am an active duty soldier with 24 years of service. I plan on applying to Georgetown's part-time evening MBA program.

I am 41 years old with a BS in Management from University of Maryland University College - GPA 4.0

I have a wealth of leadership and management experience in a wide array of circumstances.

My LORs are great, and I think my essays are very good.

My biggest issue is the GMAT - I scored 540 in January but plan to re-take in March. I am confident that I will raise my score to AT LEAST the mid 600's.

Thanks.

jk2010,

Part-time programs are generally less demanding than full-time programs in terms of GMAT scores, but your 540 would probably be a deal-breaker at G'town, even with your stellar undergrad GPA. On the other hand, a score in the mid-600s would put you in the hunt, especially if you are an Underrepresented Minority. If you haven't worked with a GMAT prep service, consider doing so.

Business schools love military applicants because the leadership is baked in; just be sure to explain to them the Why Now question (transitioning out of the military into the civilian world would be a natural argument, of course).

Hope this helps,
