Hey there fellow members,

2 years ago I gave the GMAT and I scored 530 without any preparation. Unfortunately I cannot remember what my math score was, but my verbal score was definitely in the low 20s.

In late summer I decided I will take the GMAT again. I have been studying for a few months now and went through the MGMAT guides. After going through the Quant guides I scored a 580 (Q 42, V29). Later on I also read the Verbal books and took 2 another CATs. I scored a 580 (Q36, V33) and a 620 (Q40, V35). Today I took another practice test! BOOM, a disappointing 590 (Q44, V29)

Here is the thing: My scores are all over the place. On one test I miss only 3 SC problems, on the other I miss 9, etc. I am having trouble raising my math score as well. I am not bad in math. In fact, I was familiar with most of what was in the MGMAT quant guides. My problem is that I have difficulties applying the right concepts. For instance, when I read a problem I am not sure how to attack it (I would easily solve all problems if I had someone over my shoulder telling me each step).

I desperately need some tips from someone who used to have the same problem and managed to raise his/her score from high 500s.

Thank you!
G

Sounds like you need to brush up on your fundamentals. Your story is indicative of many GMAT test takers: "I understand this stuff, but I get everything wrong." The way to improve this is to master all of the material. You need to be able to quickly recall information about a variety of different topics, not just be able to replicate work. This exam tests how you think, not your ability to follow steps. Keep drilling until you have mastered the concepts...

I totally agree with Jim.

I'll also add that the GMAT is a test of your math and verbal skills, AND it's a test of your test-taking skills. If your test-taking skills (i.e., time management, anxiety reduction, endurance) are not strong, then your scores can fluctuate wildly.

If you're interested, we have a free GMAT time management video at https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gener ... es?id=1244

At the same time, I suggest that you take an official practice test (https://www.mba.com/the-gmat/download-fr ... tware.aspx) since this will be the best indication of your current abilities.

Cheers,
Brent
