Is this a Good GMAT Study Plan

by beyondenim » Fri Jul 22, 2011 3:52 am
I will be taking my GMAT early next year, I have about 8 months to study for the GMAT and I made a study plan already, gathered resources, notes and etc.

Tell me what do you think.

I will start off by taking the GMAT PREP and see my score from there on which topics I should improve the most.

I've decided to study 1.5 hrs weekdays including Saturdays. 3 hrs on a Sunday.

QUANTS

I'll start off with the MGMAT Guides - Quants (5 books), Number Properties, Fractions Decimals & Percents, Equations Inequalities & VICs, Word Translations and Geometry. This is already a correlation with the Official Guide 12th Edition,I will be studying the OG 12th Ed after each and every Manhattan guide.

I will then be studying the 198 Level 700 questions from GMAT Prep I and Probabilities (I got it from a forum somewhere as well and I found this very useful), and I will also study for additional questions The Official Guide 10th Edition- Math as I found their questions to be harder and lengthier than that of the current edition. I will also study some 1000 PS and 1000 DS Questions for additional practice.

VERBAL

I'll start off with the MGMAT Guides - Verbal (3 books), Critical Reasoning, Sentence Correction and Reading Comprehension , This is already a correlation with the Official Guide 12th Edition,I will be studying the OG 12th Ed after each and every Manhattan guide.

I will also be studying the Power Score Critical Reasoning Bible and some 1000 CR, 1000 SC and 1000 RC Passages and I will also study for additional questions The Official Guide 10th Edition- Verbal as I found their questions to be harder and lengthier than that of the current edition.

And finally I will be reading the Kaplan 800 for both Math and Verbal Hard questions.

Practice Tests: GMAT PREP 1, GMAT PREP 2 and POWER PREP.

And ofcourse, I will be an active member of this forum, it will be of great help throughout the whole GMAT process!

Hi beyondenim,

It looks like you have a solid plan.

I have to admit that, when I read that you have 8 months to prepare, my initial reaction was "that's too much time." Of course, I say this somewhat jokingly, because it's impossible for one to have too much time to prepare, right? Well, the problem is that some students come to believe that they have so much time to prepare that they don't fully engage in preparing for several months. Instead, they do an hour here and an hour there. Sometimes several weeks pass before they resume their studies. Then, one day, they realize that they have little time remaining, and they need to ramp up their studying. Unfortunately, up to that point, their studying has been so sporadic that they pretty much need to start at the very beginning, in which case any work they did up to that point was somewhat irrelevant.

Now I'm not saying that this scenario applies to everyone. But it certainly applies to enough students for me to make this recommendation:

Make it your goal to write the GMAT in 3 or 4 months.

Based on the number of hours you intend to study, this should be ample time. If it isn't enough time, you still have several months if you need them.

A 3- or 4-month deadline will help focus your studies and motivate you each day.
An 8-month deadline can (potentially) be a recipe for inaction (for some students)

Cheers,
Brent

Hi

Even I am thinking of giving GMAT early next year but do not have any resources i.e. notes and books , Have to gather all , would be a great help if someone can tell me the best books to be referred for all the sections.

About me :
I am into IT - Services from past 4.5 years and have good knowledge of the IPTV solutions and mobile applications.

For My Info :
By the time I write GMAT, would have completed more than 5 yrs in the IT industry with more than 2.5 yrs co-located at the client side in UK , Does this helps and stands a chance for me to get in to TOP 25 colleges for MBA(with the GMAT score of 680 - 700)

Kindly suggest.

Thanks
Ankur

Thank you so much for replying to my question. The reason why I want to get an early start with the GMAT is because I simply do not have sufficient time to study, say 3 hours a day because I am stuck in my business (I don't have a leave or any sort or can quit), I can manage to study 1.5 hours a day but that's it.

But you haven't exactly answered my question in full, Are my resources ENOUGH? Should I add more books? Any note worthy resources? Let me know.

Sorry about that.

I think you have enough materials for now; in fact, you may have too many. It all depends on your current abilities. For example, if you take a GMATPrep practice test and find that you are only 50 points away from your target score, then you probably won't need to review all of those materials.

Time for a practice test! :-)

Brent
