Should I retake the GMAT?

by BillN_5 » Sun Jan 17, 2010 8:48 am
I just did the GMAT for the first time yesterday and scored 700! My breakdown is a little wide though, with Q42 and V44 (62nd percentile quant, 97th percentile verbal).

I feel like 700 overall is very good so I don't think it would make sense to rewrite based on a low quant score (my GPA is almost perfect and I have other credentials which would supplement my quant skills). Truth be told, I chocked on the real exam b/c on practice tests I consistently scored mid 70s on Math.

What do you guys think? Redo or stick to it?

It completely depends on what program you are looking at. If you are looking at a top 10 school and are completely confident you can raise the score, go for it....

If you're looking at a mid tier school, there probably is no need to retake, IMO.

Don't waste 250 dollars when it isn't needed.

Bill,

Can you please let us know more on the difficulty level of the CR and RC with respect to the GMAT PREP.

Also, any thoughts on the SC's compared to the OG, GPREP and Manhattan

Hey paragbmehta,

I'm not sure I can really comment on your questions. To be honest I did not study the verbal sections at all. I've heard though that the Manhattan SC is the "bible" for that particular question type so I would probably recommend that for you if you plan on mastering that part of the exam.

If I compare the verbal from the actual exam to the GMAT Prep tests (I did both of them) and Manhattan (I did 1 of those), I would honestly say they are comparable in difficulty (I found the RC passages a bit easier on the real exam though).

I think a great resource for the verbal section of the GMAT that I have not seen anyone mention on any forums is potentially LSAT study materials. I spent 2 months studying for the LSAT, never ended up going to write it and instead decided to pursue a business degree and work. Now, roughly two years later, I found the GMAT verbal section nothing short of a joke compared to the LSAT. I think that study truly prepared me for the logic questions and the passages that I saw on the GMAT. The LSAT argumentative section and passages are far more challenging and must be done in less time (so if you can prepare for that, the GMAT will really not be a problem).

I hope that helps. Let me know if you need any further help!

Cheers

I've heard that B-schools would like to see around 80% in both sections and I know there's some wiggle room there... I've never heard of a split like yours though! Still a great score... I hope to get that in a couple months... I honestly don't know what I would do if I were in your situation... I personally have a strong background in my undergrad quant classes (econ major) so I might be content with that split. But each person is different... I also know that I'm ready to take this exam and be done with it.. but if you think you can get a higher score (I mean it was your first sitting...) and you don't mind that $250 fee... then why not? It's early yet (if you're thinking about applying this year)

best of luck!
