Low GMAT Score. Need advice

by abeer85 » Tue Feb 11, 2014 9:40 pm
Hi,

So I got a low GMAT score like really low since I had just one month to practice and I had work going on and to be honest I am just really bad in Maths. I have already submitted my application in two Universities that I am applying for PhD and they required GMAT score which I have to submit now. The problem is whether I should submit the scores or not or should I tell them that since my score is low its better that they just forget my application. The deadlines have passed so they are just waiting for GMAT score so I don't know what to do. Would like some advice. Thank you.

Hi abeer85,

You'll probably receive a more pointed answer if you post your questions in the Admissions Forum. PhD programs tend to be competitive, so a low GMAT score could very well impact your chances at being admitted. Im curious why you waited until the last month before starting your GMAT prep? It might turn out that you will reapply to these programs next year, once you've taken the necessary time to properly prep for the GMAT.

Hi Rich,

Basically so far the PhD's that I had applied to did not require GMAT but then I came across this PhD vacancy that was open in the university that I hag graduated from. In the requirements they required GMAT and deadline was after a month. I thought I'd give it a try and give the GMAT so that's why I just had a month to prepare. I have sent the score anyway but I guess it's going to be a no. At least I tried and If I'm lucky I might get into the other universities that I have applied. Though I really wanted to go to my old university :(.

Hi abeer85,

Since we're talking about graduate school, barring some sort of strange situation, I'm going to assume that the PhD program is still going to be around next year. While you're clearly interested in applying to school now, the relevant question to ask is....

What's MORE important: Getting into any school now OR getting into your first choice school (perhaps later)?

There was no harm in your first attempt at the GMAT; it sounds like you did the best that you could under the circumstances. It might be worth contacting your first choice school again to explain your situation (and desire/goal) and see if the school's representatives might give you an extension to retake the GMAT. If they say "no", then there's nothing lost, but what if they say "yes".....?
