Possibility & Strategy ?

by marik » Tue Dec 04, 2012 6:50 pm
Background :
Decided to Give GMAT in Sep 2012 end , Collected books , Manhattan GMAT Series and OG13.
Used PowerSCore for Critical Reasoning.
As i wanted to apply for ISB , Deadline NOV 30,2012 , i scheduled my GMAT for 30 Nov.
Break of 9-10 days as i had to Travel on for Video Essay of ISB to my Base Office and other aspects.( Octber Mid )
Prepared everyday from Oct 24 till Nov 28
Parallel writing of Essays, Till Nov 28, i could only finish the OG once , and Did the Diagnostic Tests at the begning of OG.

DID NOT get time to do any full length tests.( Infact the first full length test was my actual GMAT exam , on 30 Nov )
Flew on 28th night to City KOLKATA, India 700 kms away to give my exam , gave the GMAT on 30th NOV, Scored a 6 4 0 ( Quant 45 , Verbal 34 )

Question :
1. Is it possible to improve my score to the 740-760 level ?
2. What should be my strategy for the same ? ( I have released my weak aspect to be Verbal )

It's hard to say whether you can improve to the 740-760 level because it really depends on how much work you put into your prep. But you can definitely improve your score since you did not have the best possible prep (no full length test, for example). Although you say your weakness is Verbal, a Q45 means there's still a fair amount of room to improve. Aim for Q50.
In terms of strategy, target each section intensively rather than do them all at the same time. Master Powerscore CR bible and MGMAT SC. SCs are the section that can see improvement most quickly and easily because all you do is follow rules. Download 1000 RC and 1000 SC from the web for more practice questions. Do 6+ full length tests under timed condition (GMAT PREP, MGMAT and Kaplan are good sources).
Good luck. Perhaps my debrief can help https://www.beatthegmat.com/first-attemp ... 48256.html

A clarification on - It's hard to say whether you can improve to the 740-760 level because it really depends on how much work you put into your prep. : This refers to the effort i put in now , or hereon ?

Dear marik

I did get an offer from ISB this year (R1) so I can guide you on some basics:
The admission depends upon your entire profile - GMAT score, years of work-ex, acads 10,12,graduation, job profile, extra curr, application form and interview.

640, I would say is on the lower side. However, if you get short-listed, you should try one more time before the interviews and aim for 680+... This will brighten your chances of making it.
If you do not get a call, have a comprehensive study plan and give the next GMAT by May '13. Aim for 700+ which is achievable considering you fared pretty well without giving practice tests.

For more, you can refer my blog.

what's most interesting to me, here, is the complete lack of details about what's most important -- namely, what you actually did with all of these books/resources.
this is basically just a list of books, which, by itself, doesn't provide any insight into your actual study approach.

for instance, what is "finishing the OG"?
that can mean a whole lot of different things, and the differences are crucially important.
let's take the quant section as an example. if "finishing the OG" just means doing the problems and then moving on, then that doesn't have much value. on the other hand, if "finishing the OG" means finding every way you can possibly find to solve the problems -- most of which can be solved in two or more completely different ways -- then that's a whole lot more meaningful.

also, if "studied every day" is literal -- i.e., you actually studied 7 days a week -- then that's not good, either.
this is not a test of memorization; it's a test of flexible thinking, and the brain needs entire days (and, occasionally, periods of several days in a row) away from studying to make the requisite neuronal connections.
DID NOT get time to do any full length tests.
this is a mistake.
you don't need to go crazy with full-length tests -- really, there's no reason to take more than a couple of them, unless your time management is a serious issue -- but, at the same time, you need to expose yourself to the rhythm and timing of the complete exam.
1. Is it possible to improve my score to the 740-760 level ?

with the lack of information above, it's impossible to give a meaningful answer to this question. however, the good news is that there is no business school in the world for which you actually need a score that high.

2. What should be my strategy for the same ?

it seems as though you are looking for a complete strategy for the entire verbal section in one forum thread. there is, of course, no such thing.

however, here are some remarks i made to another student with similar scores:
