Done with it - 710 Q48 V38

by sumitkhurana » Wed Apr 01, 2009 4:11 am
Hi folks,

Done with it. While I achieved what I set out to, before I began my preparations, somewhere along the way I got greedy, and not being able to crack the mystery of 750+ scores is a little bit of a disappointment.

But on a whole, happy.

Quant:-

48 on maths was a sin since it always was my strong point. In my opinion, GMAT maths is different than GMAT prep maths both in terms of content and length. I finished the GMATprep quant sections 15 minutes before time, everytime I scored a 48 or a 49. A couple of times I got 50, I could hardly finish the test.

I struggled to finish the test this time too (guessing the last one), and yet got only a 48, and trust me the questions never got easier along the way, atleast as they used to, in GMATPrep. I was actually expecting a 50, but anyways. In my opinion you should consider buying material like GMATFocus etc because I have heard from others that it actually is more GMAT like.

Infact, if I am forced to make this comparison, I would say that it was more MGMAT like than GMATprep like.

English :-

On the contrary, I found the verbal easier as compared to GMATprep. I am doing the comparison with verbal on GMATprep in which I scored a 38. The SC especially was very easy and straight forward. To be frank, if this one is to go by, O.G and MGMAT appear to be enough for the SC practice, for a mid 30 plus verbal score, IMO. RC and CR were also O.G types.

My sincere thanks to the creators of this forum, forum mates such as Logitech, Karmayogi, Cramya, Mals24, Raunekk and others. And, would also like to thank Stuart, Ian, Stacey and Ron for their great posts.

Just listing my GMAT prep scores for the time being:-

GMATPrep1 :- 700 ( Feb second week)
GMATPrep2 :- 700 ( March 3rd week)
GMATPrep1 :- 710 ( 4 days before the exam)
GMATPrep2:- Q50 ( 2 days before the exam)

Would get back with a few more tips that I think helped me improve and could possibly help others too.

Thanks
Cheers
Sumit...

Seems your actual score was in line with gmatprep. Even if the questions you saw where more difficult, do not forget that nobody really know how the algoritm works, so it could be perfectly fine. What matters here is that your scores were in line. Good job and congrats! Which schools will you apply to?

Thanks mjjking for the wishes.

Actually, I am an engineer by background, with roughly 9 years of IT experience in India. I am married with a kid, and the prospects of recession lasting longer than everyone thinks is a big concern for me.

The only college, I would "probably" be applying to would be India School of Business. The opportunity cost is high, with no guarantees. Would evaluate college's performance at this year's campus placements, and would then take a call.

Cheers

hey Sumit congrats on your GMAT performance. 710 is a dream score for a lot of us (V38 for sure is!!!).
Wishing you all the very best for your 'probable' applications at ISB and future endeavors. :)
Do keep us informed about your decision and also update us on your analysis of ISB placements this year (that would be pretty informative).

Looking forward to part 2 of your debrief.

Great experience. I guess you have elements of solid application. But average of your dream school is defintely on a higher side and I am sure your experience will play an important role in your selection. As the school moved up higher in the ranking, the next year would be even more competitive. Just for your information, there was one more applicant on this forum, name Dilip Sinha ( or close to this name may be dileep or so) who had a vast exerience and was called for an ISB Interview..may be you can PM him and check out the story in detail. All the best!
