Hi ngufo,

Thanks for your great post again.Your each post is great inspiration for me.I have prepared document of all your posts and going to take printout of all of them soon ,Whenever I get upset with my low Verbal scores I start reading your old posts.

vgmat2 - Reg SC my experience is difference between answer choices is a great help.GMAT SC book is "the best".I have some PR audio files also which cover basic grammar and SC.If you want please let me know.
I'll just check with Eric whether I'm allowed to post audio content here.

Thanks,
Ajay

SC: Dude dont try to figure out the solution before reading the answers :). That will kill you - I know because that killed me too :). I did the exact same for the first 3 months of practise. I HATED SC. i couldnt for the love of god figure out how the hell to get them right. Every damn answer looked good to me!!!!. princeton gave a good technique. See the underlined portion, and then immediately look at the answers (dont even TRY to figure out what should be right). When you see the choices use the 3/2 technique. Based on the answers you will see that 3 questions have similar usage, like " The children have had their dinner and gone to bed". Three choices will show you have and 2 will shwo you has. You immediately no that has is wrong. Cut your alphabets - great now you just have to figure out the remaining three. Now instead of you trying to figure out what is write, compare teh differences between the three ansewrs. Try to see what the author has done different in those three choices. Often times that helped me figure out what was right (most times what I thought should be there never was :) - not sure if my english is that bad, or GMAT just sucks ;) ).
finally make a flash card for EVERY sentence correction question you get wrong... I know that sounds crazy, but trust me, that alone helped me get very very good at SC. It was hard to remember all the idioms, all the patterns. I also have a problem of basic informatin retention. I forget things very quickly (had this problem since I was small). Read something then forget :(. So by making flash cards and swriting it down (I have explained how I made the flash cards), and practising the questions reguarly, I would remember how the sentence patterns were. In 6 months I had 4 big business card boxes of flash cards (used my official business cards as flash cards). I would practise them regularly. Keep in min dthe usage (try to answer without looking at th eanswer. Not by memorizing the anser, but by memorizing what was wroing - like oh there is a parallelis error here, there isan applies and oranges error here so on so forth (I used princeton verbal to learn the fundamentals. It explains that very easily). By doing that after 6 months of lots of flash cards and lots of revising I started seeing patterns - it became much more easier. It was only then that I got the Manhattan SC book (it would have been too complicated for me earlier). Later on I was able to add on to my base with the book. (I made flash cards, of important concepts from the book too)

RC: Another painful portion for me. Probably the worst. Given my retention problem by the time I would finish reading the passage, I had completely forgotton what the hell the author was talking about :(. If you talk about crazy frustration and depression - this area killed me. I remember thinking of buying some mental ability tests, to help me fix my retrention issue, to help me focus. I practiced with soem tools on the web -all it helped was giving me a big headache :(. I tried everything possible - reading all blogs, asking for help, trying to emulate the techniques people mentioned - nothing worked. Finally with a lot of practise and trying new technique I found a way that worked for me. I realized that the first para and the last para, basically control the entire flow of the passage (introduction and summary para). The paras in middle were like e.gs, or details of some specific thing. If I could keep track of what the first and secon para was talking about, and have a basic understanding of what was in the middle paras, I was able to do a better job of answering my RC. So when I would read, I would read the 1st and last para very carefully. The middle paras, I would skim thru. When flow/passage structure questions were asked (previously I would get them wrong, as I would be reading everything in detail, and forgetting the same after completing the passage). After my new technique I got those questions right. For questions in which they asked a specific question about the passage, it was easy enough to go and re-read a few lines to get the exact answer - BINGO. I was just so excited the day it started working for me. It happened out of the blue - one day nothing was happening the next day it just happend....

Having said all the above vgmat2 I will surely add the following. I feel your pain .. - you are going thru the same struggle I went thru.... The struggle to improve, the struggle to not loose faith in one self, the faith that I am good enough, and that its only a matter of time, that if I keep trying to find a way out - god will definitely show me the way to improve. That if I dont try at all - there is no hope. That always got me going - I knew that if I didnt keep reading books for new techniques, trying new ways, , looking, asking for help, doing whatever it took to keep finding ways out, then the only other option for me was to be stuck where I was currently... Trying, hoping, practising, gives you the option to get better - not trying, kills any hope (what is life without hope?)..........

I dont know what the GMAT supplement is? I just used the OG 10th edition (fat book with crazy amount of questions - would do 100 a day - 20 (CR, RC, SC) 20 (Problem solving, Ds). every day in the morning from 5-8 am. (Everything timed - really think that helped me a crazy lot). Its painful but helped me build my stamina, time myself, and feel much more confident. If you arent doing the GMAT 10th, edtion or 11th edition please do so. It is the most important.

I really hope the above helped. Your email gives me a lot of faith that you will succeed. I see the same fire in you, the same burn to crack the GMAT . The same desire to succeed against all odds, the same will to not take NO for an answer no matter what.... just some voice inside that says, that if I give everything I have to this endeavour, how is it not possible that I will not succeed .... I see the same fire in you .....

God helped me achieve my goal - I shiver sometimes just thinking how much against the odds I was able to achieve that score. The 4 years it took me to make up my mind, and do it. Probably thats the part which helps me help people out in a similar position - I feel the pain .... :(

Dont you dare give up buddy - you are on the right track. Put everything into your try for GMAT. I am very very sure that you will succeed.....

Wish you all the best,
-ngufo

Hi Ekta,
I took the Gmat Prep 2 yesterday and scored 590 (30 Q, 33V). My weak areas are Data Sufficiency and Sentence correction. I think Quant on the whole gives me the jitters. A week ago I took the free MGMAT test and scored 620 and thought I was on the right track but GMAT Prep 2 is a major reality check. I am just not going to give up and let the GMAT get the better of me. I have the last 50 Q left in OG 11 and few Verbal.

After having faired badly yesterday, I am wondering if it would be a good idea to purchase one of the MGMAT books to gain access to the 6 tests online or just continue with my old strategy of finishing the OG 11 and revisiting all the wrong ones and the lessons learned. I will finish the OG in either case but need serious ADVICE on if I should do the 6 tests or just stick to revising in the last 2 weeks. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Quick Question Don't Know If You Can Help...

by Zazoo » Tue Mar 25, 2008 12:25 am
Hey Ngufo,

This past weekend has been great for me, I managed to cover about 3/4 of the quant section - have statistics, prob and a little more geometry to cover and i'm done with that section. :D Then it's crunch time... tackling some really tough problem solving sessions.

During my studying, I came across quite an interesting problem for which I couldn't understand how they got to the solution and was wondering if you could perhaps explain.

It was a problem to calculate simple interest after 10 years and based on the formula, i.e (1 + n)^a * amount, i came to the same answer the author got which was (1 + 0.05)^10 * amount. This is where I got stuck, how in the world do you calculate (1.05)^10 without a calculator?

I tell you, my family, a bunch of mathematicians :) tried every possible theorem (incl binomial) they could think of to solve this one... but in vain. If you can think of an easy way to do this, please would u let me know?

I found the idea of making flash cards from business cards quite funny but very innovative indeed! :o I am considering ordering more myself

Regards

Zazoo

Hi Sangeetha,
Have you gone thru the princeton Maths (for the Data Sufficiency technique)? Also do keep in mind when you answer the questions that you cannot assume that the number is an integer (that is the biggest mistake that I would make). Also have you finished all your princeton/kaplan books before doing Official guide? Did you make sure you practised every question you got wrong? When you get amaths question wrong, do try to solve it on your own first, and only then look at the answer. That helps you get the concept much better.

Why are you getting maths questions wrong?Or is it that you are just taking a lot of time to solve them? You will first need to be able to pin point what your weakness is before you can start working towards elimination the issues. In case you are just taking time, then you ahe to practise as much as possible. Bottom line you have to make sure you are comfortable with all the concepts, and are not making the same mistake twice yar.

I would suggest that before you try something new, do make sure that you have made sure that every single question that you may have done wrong in OG, redo it again, and make sure you are comfortable with them. The questions that come are very close to whta yo have in OG. If you are sure you know all the questions there, than chances are better of doing better in the exam.

Have you finished GMAT CAT 1/2, and GMAT Prep 1/2 all four tests - those are very very important to get done. I would say that more than the MGMAT tests the four that I mentioned are even more important to get done Sangeetha.

I hope you have made lots of flash cards, and have been practicing your SC using the flash cards. Thatelped me a lot. Given that too much time isnt left, just revise as much as you can, and make sure that you are timing yourself well. Dont leave any question unanswered, and dont spend too much time on any one question!

Feel free to email me if you ahve any questions - keep the faith, and put in as much work as possible.

Take care,
-ngufo

Hi J_Mugo,
Just jotting down a few things that worked for me on the "D-Day", hope they are of use to you ...

1. Make sure you answer every question (dont leave any if you can help, just make blind guesses if you dont have time)

2. IF you are running out of time, and its a QUANT problem solving question, just select D (that has the highest probability of being right ...)

3. Make sure you time yourself - you should know exactly how much time you have left (I would write the start time on each question before doing it, so that by the time I finished I knew how much tim ehad elapsed. This really helped me pace myself better"

4. Go thru all your flash cards before the exam

5. Re-do you gmat power prep/CAT 1,2 before the exam (the week before).

6. Day before your exam dont do a test - just revise important concepts. You want your mind to be fresh/functioning - not tired :)

7. If you see a question very hard (you will know whether you can do it or not). For e.g. if I saw a probability/permuationcombination question, I knew it would be tough for me, so after spendign 30-45 seconds if I got a sense that I dont know what to do, I wouldnt waste time, wouil dmake a best guess and move on

8. For the first 5-10 question spend some extra time making sure that you are getting it right. But remember you need to know exactly how much time extra you spent, so you can make it up later :(. I couldnt do last 4 questions in my exam, becasue I ran out o ftime - I just made sure I put the value D in all the final answers blindly.

9. In the last few weeks, revise all your mistakes in OG (if you have kep track of them, finsih any questions left , and go thru important formulate/questions that you got wrong).

10. Go thru the SC manhattan book - the book is good I think just before you go for the exam, to further solidy concepts.

11. Dont panic. When I started my quant, I couldnt bloody understand the first question at all. After 3 minutes were over and I was getting no where I started sweating. At that point I took a deep breath, calmed down and said I had nothing to loose, let me focus and try to answer the quesiton (itwas a percentages question, very verbose, (not a probability) hence Iknew I could do it. Spent 2 more minutes adn got it right). I had spent 5 minutes on the first question :(, so made sure I didnt spedn unnecessary time on any other question. The worst thing is spendign 5 minutes on a tough question and getting it wrong ......

11. I finally I gave a prayer to god - My take is that after you've put your everything in it, it may be that getting all four of those "D's" that you guessed right, is just him helping you along the way :)

Wish you all the best, will definitely pray to god, to help you achieve your dream....

Take care,
-ngufo

hey ngufo,

its me again !! well not too much good news...but i did better...i scored 620 this time ( 46 Q, 30 V ) ....up from 550 that i got las ttime around...

you know what - i was on track for a easy 680-690...but i suddenly got overcautious in RCs and spent an awful time on them...and in the end had only 8 mins for last 10 questions...that brought my verbal score down...i should have scored 37-38 easily ...tht would have taken me close to 700...

not disappointed....but this was an easy miss due to flawed strategy.... ! I plan to write it again in 4 weeks...and will get the 690-700 this time you bet !!!!

I was very slow in RC ..abt 14-15 mins each for the 1st 2 RCs ...i shouldnt have spent more than 10-12 mins on each of them....next time i will pace myself better.....!

Wish me luck...and thank to you...i havent been demotivated yet :-))

Btw ..how did you pace yourself in Verbal ? i kind of lose track of time :-((

Lemme know.

Take care

HI workhard,
Somehow every time I reply to you, god makes me work harder Seriously!!
Yet again I wrote a long email, and it got deleted somehow while I was typing,so rewriting it yet again. :)
First thing first - it was a pleasure reading your email. Your email screamed the word "ATTITUDE", and you sound
like you know you are going to nail the exam, I can make out from your email that you DO BELIEVE IT. You know work hard
that is half of the battle already won buddy - the rest is all mechanics. Its funny but I saw this indian movie
recently which became a huge hit "Om Shanti Om", and in that movie this guy says, that when you want something
truly with all of your heart, the whole world/universe, comes together to make it happen for you. Keep your faith,
keep your belief, and keep up the good work, the stars are aligning for you ....

From 550- 620 is AWESOME. Its nothing small - it screams progress big time. Every 10 points move is pretty hard
so you should be really proud of yourself. As for the timing, yup I know what you are taking about, I went thru
the same crisis too. The only thing that helped me was timing myself. I would write down the tme on the notepad
before I started the RC like

RC start: 1.20

Ques 1: 1.24
A B C D E

2. 1.26
A B C D E

When I started RC and when I finished it I would have an idea how much time I took. I rememeber that at that time
I knew that I had to finish my RC within I think 4 minutes ( I amnt sure of the numbers any more:(, its been
a while, so do double check what you think should be the time you believe you need to spend on your RC). But
after that when I went to answer the questions, I would write the start time again, adn I would know how much tme I hae
spent. If it was too much, I knew I had to pace my answers faster and make up for it on other questons. I would
write this time, before eery single question(be it quant or verbal). It helped me pace myself very very
well. Do try it out, hopefully it should work for you too!

I am very very sure that when you writethe exam god will help you get a score that is the best possible.
You are trying so hard, you deserve nothing but the very best,

Take care

Hi Ngufo,

I have been preping for 2 months now, My verbal score keeps going down. At one point I got 39 , then 34, 30 and now 22. And 22 was on gmat prep-2 when I gave full exam including essays. I ran out of time on 27 question on verbal and after that everything was blind guesses. I am little concerned. Any help on my timing issue is really appreciated. On exam I am unable to decide when I should hang around on one particular question and when I should move on.

I know you did mention about writing time before and after the question. Did you do it in real exam ?

Any tips in this regards will help.

thanks
Vgmat2.
