Hi

I would like to have your feedback on my chances of making it to the top US Business Schools, especially those with a focus on Consulting / Leadership & Strategy roles.

My profile is as follows:

- Indian, Male, 31 years (32 by 2012 admission intake)
- GMAT - 700 (90%), Q-49 (86%), V-35 (73%)
- Bachelor's GPA - Got 67% marks (2000), GPA concept not clear
- Post Graduation - MBA from a Top 10 Indian Business School, GPA 4.2 / 6.0 (2002)
- CFA Level III Candidate
- Work experience - 9 years (as on Nov, 2011). Worked in UK, China & India.
Current (2009 onwards): Private Banker (HSBC, India). Client Acquisition and Portfolio management Previous (2005-2008): Private Banker (ICICI Bank, UK). Client Acquisition and Portfolio management
First Job (2002-2004): Export Manager (Apollo Tyres, China). Business development for export markets
- Leadership Roles:
Handled China export operations for a 5-member team (2003-04)
Set up Private Banking office for ICICI in UK (2006)
- Extra curricular activities: Involved as a volunteer with a charitable medical dispensary

Target B-Schools: Top 10 US B Schools, with focus on Consulting / Strategy & Leadership careers. LBS, Insead
"¢ Career Progression post-MBA: Short-term Consulting. Long-term - Leadership/Entreprenuership

I need your guidance on the following aspects:

1. Which B Schools should I target with my current profile? Which amongst top 5 (HBS/Wharton/Stanford/Booth/Kellogg) shall I rule out?
2. Any positives / negatives associated with 2nd MBA, 9 years work-ex?

Please let me know, if you need any more information. Any suggestions and comments are welcome. Thanks in advance for your inputs!

Best regards

Amit

You have a good profile. Age is the only factor working against you. I had two people with 34 in my class. You might have higher chances at LBS and INSEAD as the average age at these schools is higher.

The key for your success lies solely on your essays now. You have to write good essays, especially about your leadership role in setting up a private banking office for ICICI in UK. Generally, most people have less achievements after 5 or 6 years of experience. If you can show that you have progressed well in your career, age will become less of a problem.

The need for a second MBA can be explained in various ways. You would have done your first MBA directly after your undergrad. So, you can explain the need for a second MBA for a global career. Moreover, the class profile at your bschool would have been with people with less or no experience.

Good luck!

Hi Amit,

Your profile is solid and GMAT score is also decent.
But we strongly suggest that you should not apply to HBS and few other schools. Reason: If you see the class profile, HBS is last 2-3 years hasnt taken anyone with 8+ yrs of pre MBA exp. Same is true with few other top US schools.

We strongly recommend you to apply to European schools because they want applicants with more experience and you will also save 1 yr ( barring LBS which is 2 yr MBA).

Also, find a strong reason to defend the second MBA thing. Schools, especially US schools, will carefully evaluate your reasons for doing MBA now and will also want you to tacitly answer why are you not thinking about an executive MBA after waiting for 1-2 yrs.

Hope that helps.
