Profile Evaluation

by help » Thu Jan 29, 2009 1:58 pm
Please evaluate my chances, if any, of getting into top 3 (HSW)
I will be applying next year and was wondering if I had an outside chance.

GMAT: 730
Undergrad - Computer Engineering: GPA - 3.5 (India - non IIT)
Masters GPA - 4.0 (US)
Age 27 at matriculation
Gender: Male
Nationality: Indian
Work ex: Associate Consultant (Analyst) at Bain (US) 3 years at matriculation
Extracurricular: Captain of sports team, active member of public speaking clubs, class representative
Community Service: Involved in spreading education (NGOs) at various stagies of my life

What do you think is the weakest part of my application, will i be too old? Your opinion is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi there,

Congrats on your excellent GMAT score, which is certainly a strong plus for your application to top programs.

Your other factors/background as listed is certainly strong, nothing raises a red flag, and your age is not really beyond the average range for most students. If anything, the challenge thus far is just that you are part of a large group of applicants--male Indian engineers, so you'll need to stand out from the rest of that group.

Since you have a strong GMAT, academics, and average work experience, that all means that the remaining/personal admissions factors will actually be the MOST important for you--- primarily this means your essays. (to a secondary degree, references, and interview if you get to that point). The essays are where you make your case and convince the admissions committee that, as I've said elsewhere, the MBA is right for you at this point in time, that this particular school is right for you, and that you are right for their program. If you don't make this case and show what you bring to the program and what it will bring to your career, all of the other stats (GMAT, GPA, etc) will not likely be enough. So at this point, focus on your essays, be sure to put plenty of time and effort into them and get feedback from others who you respect.

Good luck!
