Question about where to apply...

by mpb » Sun Aug 16, 2009 6:20 pm
Hello, I'm would like some direction on what schools I should realistically apply to. For my undergrad, I went to Skidmore College, which is considered one of the "Little Ivy's", and earned a 3.46 GPA. I was a 4 year varsity athlete, captain of the team my Senior year and a tutor for accounting and excercise science.

I currently have 3 years of work experience and will have 4 years by the time I begin school. My work experience is a commercial real estate broker, so it's essentially a sales position.

My GMAT is as follows:

Overall: 640 75%
Verbal: 36 78%
Math: 42 62%

One of my top choices is Georgetown. Georgetown's average GMAT is 678 and their mid 80% range is 640-730. Georgetown's average undergrad GPA is 3.35, which my 3.46 is above.

Can you please let me know your thoughts on whether Georgetown is realistic option, and also any other schools that you think my profile is suitable for. My goal is to go to the best school possible.

Is there a general rule of thumb regarding how many points my GMAT score should be within to a school's average or mid 80% average to give myself a decent chance of being accepted?

Thank you very much. I really appreciate your help and any advice that you can offer.

Dear mpb,

I do think Georgetown is a realistic option for you. It will be important for your essays, recommendations and interview to set you apart and give the admissions committee a compelling reason to offer you a seat. Highlight your professional accomplishments and your interesting personal experiences in your essays. Also, try to visit the campus if you haven't already to gain additional insight into the program.

With regards to the GMAT, you want to be at or above the average to be in the best position on this measure. If your GMAT falls in the mid-50% range, then you are in a good spot and your other components can still move you to the admit pile. If you are below the mid-80% range, then you are in a tough spot. While it is not impossible to be admitted, it requires an otherwise stellar application to make it happen. The GMAT is not the most important component nor will a score outside the mid-80% range be an automatic rejection; the other parts to your application are equally important and give you a chance to shine--use them to your advantage.

As for other schools, I think comparable schools to Georgetown are possibilities for you. You want to pick a school that makes sense for your career goals and is in or near the geographic area you want to be in when you graduate. Look for schools that meet that criteria and where the GMAT average is in the 620-670 range.

Best of luck,
Lisa
